Kids love technology, schools don't.

 

Think a school network where you learn to think scientificaly with Sagan, Dawkins or Tyson, interactively with hundreds other students. And then you go learn history and geopolitics of Dark Ages playing a hot seat medieval total war where each country, is a student and you have to try to keep the history lines and share what happened later. Then you go whatch a movie about Xingu indians and land demarcations in 2012 Brasil, just before you go learn some dance with musics about grammar, or go to a virtual trip around world's largest museums with detailed informations sent diretly to your portable 3d video game or AR glasses. Like it isn't enough, when you come home you can do your online exercises debating with your classroom mates online at that moment from all associated schools at your city. The hole content is presented all the time according to demand. You choose the themes of the day, organize demand with friends and other colleagues, verifies the right school where it's available today and go have your questions exposed to discussion. All subjects can be presented according to students demand, the school stay functional durring the hole year and the kids can take 90 days off whenever they want except the normal reasons that justify the non-attendance. You keep the mandatory presence and socialization process, but use thechnology in your favor to expand the ways of learning and bring back students free participation.

Kids are deeply interested in thechnology nowadays and denying the power of this interest is ridiculous. The parents of those kids and their theachers didn't grow up in this reallity and seem to excuse themselves because of that, but it's imperative to adapt. The kids born after 70's grew up pratically abandoned in a virtual world "under constrution" with the exactly same problems of a real world under construction. they were building this hole wide world for today. We grew up playing inside construction yards where a brick could follow over our heads all the time. We got exposed to a loooooot of stuff our parents don't know that could exist or even be available for free. Why would we let our kids alone towndown with no advise, no precausions? Lots of stuff happened until They begin to make laws about internet and tv starts to alert about the dangers online. Nobody bothered, for 3 decades, to update the "raising children guide", nor the "educational guide". Although, we learned by ourselves.

But even everything was going ok for the 70's and 80's kids, the same thing didn't happen for those from the 90's and later. Over the 90's new thechnologies to digitalize the old fashioned books put too many info online at once. You had so much knowledge available and terrible search tools from the 80's... The 70's and 80's kids, learned how to put internet upside down to find what they needed, but with Yahoo and later Google's search tools, kids got very lazy. If it isn't on the first page, don't exist. Plus google's preferences tools that came later, searching for pages more like your favorite pages to direct your searching by the history of your clicks. If you go too much to a teenager magazine page and then search for news you will find a lot of sensacionalist news for everything on the first page. Like if you go much on scientific pages google is more likely to show more scientific based news for your subjects. The same happens to the ads are shown to you. These tools, built to ease our search not just made the users lazy, but increase stupidity once you are already lazy to search farther.

The kids aren't making a good use of this amazing tool humankind invented. They aren't understanding the power of this tool, neither do their parents or teachers. It's in the hands of those who learned how to learn by themselves to change this sad reallity too. Those kids relatives barely know how to use an e-mail account and their grandparents are still mourning the death of those dusty encyclopedia collections. Can we just leave those kids behind, delaying for another 50 years maybe the coming of real changes? Can the world sustain us that long the way we're behaving? How would you like to spend your last years on earth? In a organized society ruled by racional thinking and where everybody participate to produce the commom good not just for humankind, but for the hole planet's life? Or in a place where stupidity and corruption delapidated commom good increasely taking away from us the will and the ways to change?
